There are various cultural restaurants in Itaewon, Seoul. My favorite restaurants are Turkish kebab houses. My Itaewon restaurant tour started with encounting Turkish kebabs.
Today I found the oldest kebab house in Itaewon, Sultan Kebab.
Previously it was a small corner restaurant. Now, the restaurant has become bigger. I feel proud as a regular guest who has felt the taste of Turkey in 'Sultan Kebab' for more than 10 years.
The interior of the Sultan Kebab house is not much different from any kebab house. There are many foreigners. Sultan Kebab has a long tradition in Itaewon, so foreign clerks also can speak Korean.
I have never been to Turkey, but there are decorations on the ceiling that seem to be in the Turkish kebab house. Turkish foods that the oriental and western cultures meet are called 'the world's three food culture'. I should definitely go on a trip to Turkey.
Itaewon is a globalized place, but at the same time it is also Korea. It is an old experience. An old man asked a black man a way who was standing near me. I was wondering if a foreigner would know the route, but surprisingly he explained the bus route well in Korean.
The Sultan Kebab house also sells Baklava and Turkish Delight as desserts. Baklava is the dessert which sprinkles sweet syrup on crumbled nuts, builds a thin crispy dough on top of it, sprinkles syrup again on top of it, and repeats.
It is very sweet because it is almost cut in syrup. If you drink bitter coffee with it, you will feel bitter and sweet together. It is recommended only for those who like sweets.
In case of Turkish Delight is like a jelly, and its taste is also similar to jelly. Expensive jelly!
I packed Sultan kebabs and came home. It is kebab that we commonly know. Chicken and vegetables are piled in a dough. Kebabs of Sultan kebabs contain plenty of chicken and vegetables.
This is a Pilaf kebab chicken. Often kebabs are reminiscent of foods like long-burrito, which means toasted meat. Like Chinese dim sum, kebab has more than 100 different dishes.
Cooked chicken on top of rice is also good kebab. Chicken is a chicken that goes up to the kebab we commonly know. It is seasoned and fragrant and spicy. Also, it burns for a long time and is greasy. It's good to have vegetables that I can eat together.
Sultan Kebab has been selling kebabs in Itaewon for more than 10 years. Though it may have been transformed according to the taste of the Korean people, it is a magical restaurant that invites nostalgia for Turkey that I have never been to.
